Mariska Hargitay (Detective Olivia Benson)

News

From the September/October 04 issue of Arrive:
Cover Story
Mariska Hargitay - In the future, all television shows will take place in New York and will be called Law & Order. In this issue of Arrive, we profile Law & Order Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay. This quadra-lingual daughter of actress Jayne Mansfield portrays the intense Detective Olivia Benson on one of TV's top crime series.

From People Magazine:
Law & Order's Hargitay Ties the Knot
Thursday Sep 02, 2004 8:50am EST

As no-nonsense NYPD Det. Olivia Benson on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, actress Mariska Hargitay rarely gets to crack a smile. But on Aug. 28 Hargitay was all grins at her Santa Barbara, Calif., wedding to actor (and SVU guest star) Peter Hermann, PEOPLE reports in its latest issue.

Hargitay donned a blush-colored Carolina Herrera gown and sported fresh gardenias in her hair, and the church nuptials "were enchanting," says wedding planner Yifat Oren. "It was really magical."

After the ceremony, which featured a gospel choir singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," the bride, 40, and groom, 37, joined their 200 guests (including 10 nieces and nephews in the wedding party) for a reception at a Montecito estate. A 6-ft.-tall wedding cake topped with a crystal "M&P" provided a sweet finish for the couple.

"They're mad about each other," says Oren. "And they're hilariously funny together."

Meantime, Hargitay may have something else to celebrate come Sept. 19: She's nominated for her first Emmy Award, for outstanding lead actress in a drama for SVU.

There's a little blurb in the September 2004 Esquire magazine. "Ten Things You Don't Know About Women" will be on page 128 and there'll be a little picture included, though I don't know if it's new or not. For a little taste, half the list from Esquire Online:
1. We love the fact that it takes you only twelve minutes to get ready for anything, be it black tie or a basketball game. When it takes longer than that . . . what are you doing in there?
2. A good plan (i.e., dinner reservations) makes for a perfect evening; no plan (i.e., no dinner reservations) makes for a quick goodbye.
3. It's not the size of the bed that matters; it's the thread count.
4. Let us catch you looking at us.
5. No short shorts. Period.

No solid date yet, but at least there's a month!

LIFETIME Original Movie "Plain Truth" - October

Emmy nominated-actress Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Lake Placid") portrays a cynical Philadelphia lawyer who defends a young Amish woman (Alison Pill) charged with murdering an infant in an explosive adaptation of Jodi Picoult's controversial, best-selling novel "Plain Truth."

"Plain Truth" is produced by Plain Truth Productions (Muse) Inc., and distributed by Robert Greenwald Productions for LIFETIME Television. Michael Prupas ("This Is Wonderland," "Icebound") and Alys Shanti ("The Crooked E," "The Book of Ruth") are the executive producers. Philip Kleinbart is the supervising producer ("Every Breath You Take," "The Stranger Beside Me"). The teleplay was written by Matt Tabak (LIFETIME Television's "Obsessed," "The Stranger Beside Me"). Paul Shapiro directs.

TVGuide Online did and interview with Mariska about her Emmy nomination. Check it out here.

Well big news today as the Emmy award nominations rolled out this morning. Included among them are our one and only...
Lead actress in a drama series: Edie Falco, "The Sopranos," HBO; Jennifer Garner, "Alias," ABC; Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," NBC; Allison Janney, "The West Wing," NBC; Amber Tamblyn, "Joan of Arcadia," CBS

...

Hargitay, who plans to wed in August, said from New York: “It’s a big couple of months for me.” “It’s such a tribute to my show. My show is so good. I feel so blessed to play such a strong character,” said the actress, who plays a tough detective on the NBC drama.

Mariska's Official Site got a new makeover recently. Do check it out, it's quite nice.

In addition to that, there's a nice long letter from her to all us fans talking about her engagement and wedding later on this summer. She also talks briefly about Plain Truth which she's filming for Lifetime in July and August in Nova Scotia. My love and devotion to any Maritimer who can scope out the sets and pass on any goodies to a fellow Canadian ;)

Well it's been a while since the rumours started, but it looks like there's some truth in Mariska and Peter getting engaged.

From NY Daily News:
Two sets of wedding bells are ringing on the set of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit." We hear Ice-T is close to sealing the deal with longtime fiancée Coco in a wedding at City Hall and that Mariska Hargitay has secretly become engaged to actor Peter Hermann, who has a recurring role on the hit drama. We're told the only thing Hargitay was concerned about was that Hermann didn't make as much money as she, so she bought her own engagement ring ...
Seems like the engagement is pretty hush hush generally (or at least was) because the newest pics up in the Galleries support the latest. Check out the specific pic here.

From Variety -
HOLLYWOOD -- "Law & Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay and Dana Delany have signed to star in a pair of original movies for Lifetime...

...Hargitay toplines the two-hour telepic "Plain Truth," penned by Matt Tabak ("Obsessed") and based on Jodi Picoult's bestselling novel of the same title. Lifetime previously adapted another of Picoult's books, "The Pact," which starred Megan Mullally...

..."Plain Truth" concerns a cynical lawyer (Hargitay) who takes on the case of an 18-year-old Amish woman accused of murder.

Will air in July.

I know a lot of people are probably expecting some news regarding a report from People.com floating around about Mariska and Peter getting engaged. Since I've only heard this information from a secondary source (someone posting about it to a list) and that one secondary source only, I'm going to refrain from throwing out streamers and confetti, if you know what I mean.

I have lots of News Alerts set up to let me know any time she's mentioned in an article online and I haven't heard anything. So... once I do hear from at least one other reputable source, I'll be happy to send my congratulations. Otherwise, I'm not really saying anything. Last thing I want is false information on my site.

Congrats to Mariska for earning a Screen Actors Guild nomination for "Actress in a Drama." She's got some stiff competition:

  • Stockard Channing, "The West Wing," NBC
  • Frances Conroy, "Six Feet Under," HBO
  • Tyne Daly, "Judging Amy," CBS
  • Jennifer Garner, "Alias," ABC
  • Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: SVU," NBC
  • Allison Janney, "The West Wing," NBC

Mariska will act alongside her father, Mickey Hargitay for the first time in Law & Order: SVU's 100th episode "Control", airing November 18.
