In the cool blue half-light of daybreak she’d slip away before the church bells pealed. In creaky pews she’d roll the beads between her fingers and pray for absolution. Her compulsion, sometimes willful disobedience, even disregard for her upbringing, pricked her conscience most on these days.
And while Olivia was forever-unrepentant about their nights together, she was no longer alarmed to wake alone or accept her penance as Alex decreed it should be during the five-day work week.
Because when the sun collapsed into the skyline at week’s end she’d find Olivia again. Her sin was one that bore repeating.
